Marco Francisco at The Drive Coffee Bar - April and May 2018

Please take a moment and read the article from the Vancovuer Sun talking about Marco Francisco and his amazing photos that are adorning the walls of the coffee bar for April and May!  Come by and check them out...

A Vancouver photographer is doing his part to bolster international aid for Rohingya Muslims fleeing horrific violence in Myanmar.

Lawyer Marco Francesco first visited Southeast Asia more than a decade ago to see a friend who was reporting for Reuters in Cambodia and then travelled to Myanmar in 2010. Francesco became enamoured with the country, returning twice more over the next five years and taking photos the whole time, he said.

“The people are incredible,” he said. “The hiking, the scenery, it’s just really untouched in a lot of ways, and very genuine.”

But since last year, an estimated 700,000 of Myanmar’s persecuted ethnic Rohingya have fled to neighbouring Bangladesh to escape a brutal campaign by Myanmar’s military. The Canadian government and others have referred to the crisis as ethnic cleansing.

Tension in Myanmar was already growing during Francesco’s visits, but “was never as bad as it has been” recently, he said.

In a report Tuesday, Bob Rae, who was appointed Canada’s special envoy to the seven-month-old crisis, recommended that Canada consider granting the Rohingya refugee and resettlement status.

While in Myanmar and Cambodia, Francesco shot thousands of photos of people he met, most of them portraits and action shots. His friends urged him to exhibit the photos in Vancouver, but he felt uncomfortable with the idea.

Pressured again by those friends and an employee at his local coffee shop, The Drive, Francesco agreed to show them — on one condition. As an outsider, he didn’t want to do so unless there was a chance it could help the photos’ subjects, who may have since become refugees or internally displaced.

“I thought, ‘Well, if I’m going to do this, all the proceeds should go to an aid organization that is working with the Rohingya’,” he said.

After some research, Francesco chose the anti-poverty organization BRAC, which tops Geneva-based NGO Advisor’s list of non-governmental organizations rated on impact and governance.

“Hopefully, the people whose images I took get some benefit in one way or another,” he said. “Hopefully.”

Francesco has chosen 14 photos to display, priced from $75 to $175. All profits will go to BRAC to help assist Rohingya refugees. The exhibit opens with a reception Thursday from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at The Drive Coffee Bar at 1670 Commercial Dr., where it will remain until April 30.

Vancouver Non Partisan Association (NPA) - Coffee with Caucus.

We are happy to be supporting our fundamental freedom to vote!

This is a quick note from the NPA - Vancouver Non Partisan Association...

"Our 2018 “Coffee with Caucus” series kicks off next Saturday morning, March 3rd at The Drive Coffee Bar, 1670 Commercial Drive. We’ll be there from 10:30 AM to Noon. Please stop by. All questions, suggestions and comments are welcome. Building the new NPA begins with you!"

The Drive Coffee Bar is happy to have the Vancouver Non Partisan Association (NPA) at the coffee bar on Saturday, March 3rd.

We are hoping that the residents of East Van / Commercial Drive come out and ask frank questions about the issues that matter to us. What do we want out of our Municipal Government.

The only way to make your city council - present or future - accountable to us, is by letting them know what is important to us!

We dont care what political view you have or don’t have.  Come out and have your voices heard.

The Drive Coffee Bar’s owners and staff do not propose to support or have any affiliation to the NPA or ANY political organization or party.

What we do have is the privilege of offering East Van voters a safe place to allow parties to come in and connect with the voters in a positive and hopefully constructive manner.

Be informed. Come out and ask questions. This is what democracy is about. You want a say in your government. You want your government to work for you!

The Drive Coffee Bar opens its doors to the other three local parties if they so choose;  The Vision Team, COPE: The Coalition of Progressiv Electors, and The Green Party of Vancouve to use the coffee bar - on different weekends of course - we don’t need riots on The Drive 😀 - for a similar forum if they so choose.

Come on out East Van - lets make our voices heard.

Join us Thursday Sept 14th and meet Artist– Cara Bain

Cara Bain is an oil painter, predominantly focused on painting the human form, and more recently, painting nature from life. She graduated from Capilano University’s Illustration & Design program where she received training in both fine and applied arts. She has since participated in many group exhibitions and one solo exhibition entitled “In Their Midst”. Her passion for community-driven art projects has led her to curate and mount Cultivate, an unjuried art and poetry exhibition, and to co-design and help coordinate the Nest Community Mural, a mural painted by volunteer residents of the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver. Known for the unexpected colours and expressive character of her portraits, her work encourages viewers to find the intrinsic beauty in each person they meet.

Over the summer, Cara has been devoting time to painting out doors from life (traditionally called En Plein Air). She has found the challenge of simplifying the complexity of nature an invigorating and stretching experience as an artist.

Local Artists - Event Nights - April 20th and 27th - Support Local and Independent Artists

We were able to get a number of artists that have adorned our coffee bar walls to come back for the month of April.

These artists hung their masterpieces on our walls for one month over the last year.

There is no fee for the artists to do this.  We do not take a cut of any of the work sold.  We are more than happy to free up the walls to showcase young and up and coming artists.

Please come down to the coffee bar either of these nights to enjoy chatting with the artists, having a glass of wine or beer, enjoy a coffee and dessert and maybe taking a piece of art home with you...

We are located at 1670 Commercial Drive in the heart of Vancouver's Little Italy.

An Evening with Dan Challis - The Drive Coffee Bar

Australian songwriter Dan Challis shares his story through unfiltered moments; exploring the light, the shade, and the roughness of being to the rustic sounds of classic American folk. Rich with punchy, understated folk hooks and see-sawing textures of outlaw country, Dan’s songs have a vulnerability and rawness that have seen him riding local airwaves in his hometown of Brisbane and earned him a following in dive-bars across New York City, since spending time there last year. Dan released his debut album 'Strong Man' last year, and is slowly establishing himself as a songwriter here in Canada

An Evening with Georgia Johnson - Friday, March 10th at The Drive Coffee Bar

Georgia Johnson is a Vancouver-based actress, singer-songwriter, and producer. She draws on her training in experimental performance to use song as a format for story-telling, mixing vivid imagery with lush harmonics. Her desire as a songwriter and artist is to capture the essence of what it is to be a wild, free spirit caught in a time-bound, linear human experience. She draws from the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest for her inspiration and imagery, the themes of her songs ranging from grief, to delight, transformation, and eventually, reverence for all creation. Songwriting influences include Josh Garrels, Anais Mitchell, Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell, James Vincent McMorrow.

Meet the Artist - Kats Klein - February 9th at 7:00PM - The Drive Coffee Bar

The Drive Coffee Bar is thrilled to have the art of Kats Klein on the walls of the coffee bar for the month of February!

Come by on the 9th and meet Kats and learn what inspires her.

Bio:

Kats began exploring a unique capture of her world at an early age. Spurred on by the gift of a Kodak 126 Instamatic camera from a blind family friend and the instructions "explore your vision of the world in your own way", she pushed the limits of tools and subjects at her disposal. She excelled in many visual arts pursuits and projects throughout high school in North Vancouver. It was a natural transition to study media and communications at Capilano College, accepted to the program as the youngest ever candidate. After graduating, Kats began a career that included technical, commercial, and artistic elements of the photographic arts industry. She would return to Capilano to continue her education and growth as an artist and gained insights from resident artists such as George Rammell and Marcus Bowcott. Kats has travelled the world intent on experiencing gallery and studio work with inspiration drawn from I. Cunningham, Klimt, Pollack, Close, and Uchoa. After 40 years of capturing, collecting, and interpreting visuals Kats has arrived at an emotionally connected vision of her world and a catalogue of work to share.
