After you have gathered all the ingredients and the necessary utensils, it’s time to get started with the recipe.

Preheat Your Oven

Before you start preparing the flan, preheat your oven to 350°F/180°C.

Caramelize the Sugar

In a saucepan, mix 1 cup (200 g) of sugar and 1/4 cup (60 ml) of water. Bring it to a boil and cook over medium-high heat, swirling occasionally until it turns into a deep amber color (around about 10 minutes). Divide the caramelized syrup evenly between small ramekins or 1 large baking dish.

Tip: Be careful not to stir too vigorously since this will encourage crystallization.

Prepare the Flan Mixture

In a blender, mix 1 can (14 oz/395 g) of condensed milk + 1 can of evaporated milk + 1 ½ cups (375 ml) of milk + 2 teaspoons of instant coffee + 6 large eggs + 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract. Blend everything together until smooth.

Add Flan Mixture into Ramekins or Baking Dish

Pour your flan mixture into caramel-coated ramekins or baking dish carefully. Also, make sure that they fit into a larger baking dish. Place your filled ramekins into your larger baking dish; pour in enough hot water to come about halfway up the side of the custard cups or baking dish.

Tip: To avoid bubbles from forming on the surface, try pouring flan mixture through a fine-mesh strainer before placing them in the oven.

Cook Flan de Café

Carefully place your larger dish in your preheated oven for around 50 minutes or until set but still slightly jiggly when shaken. Remove from oven and let it chill at room temperature if possible.

Tip: If you are making one large flan instead of individual ones, you will need to bake it for about an hour, maybe longer depending on your oven.”

Serve!

Cover for refrigeration for at least two hours. To remove them from the mold, run a sharp knife around the edges, place a serving platter on top and quickly flip it over. Lastly, don’t forget to drizzle some coffee caramel sauce or sprinkle some instant coffee powder over it just before serving!

Flan de Cafe is best served cold after being refrigerated between two and three hours. It makes for an elegant dessert which accompanies perfectly with coffee or tea after dinner.

Cuban Flan or Mexican Flan made with coffee instead- now that’s something quite magnificent!

Substitutions and Variations

In the realm of culinary creations, there’s always room for a little experimentation when it comes to recipe ingredients. So, if you’re feeling creative, here are some substitutions and variations that can help give your Flan De Cafe recipe a unique twist.

Firstly, when it comes to coffee-based recipes, instant coffee is not the only option available. Consider swapping instant coffee with other varieties like espresso powder or soluble coffee. You can also try adding a tablespoon of your favorite flavored syrup or liqueur like hazelnut, vanilla, or Irish cream to create an enhanced flavor profile.

If you’re looking for a healthier alternative to heavy cream and evaporated milk, consider substituting with milk alternatives like soy milk, almond milk or oat milk.

Another variation you can try with flan de café is swapping out one-third of the sugar used in the recipe with brown sugar. This substitution will lend a delightful caramel undertone to the custard’s sweetness.

For individuals who prefer dairy-free options, you can sub out heavy cream and evaporated milk for coconut milk or cashew cream. This substitution adds a nutty sweetness and coconut creaminess that does not compromise on taste.

Finally, if you’re looking for a bit more zing in your flan de cafe recipe, try adding spices like cinnamon or cardamom into the custard base. Or switch up the presentation by making flan cupcakes instead of one big pan of flan.

All these substitutions and variations will add interest to your Flan De Cafe Recipe keeping things exciting and new to your taste buds.

Serving and Pairing

Once your coffee flan is ready, it’s time to serve and impress your guests. The easiest way to serve this delicious dessert is by inverting the baking dish onto a plate so that the caramelized sugar layer forms the topping for the flan.

For a more tropical touch, serve with freshly sliced mango or papaya on the side. The creamy texture of the flan complements the sweetness of these fruits exceptionally well. If you prefer a richer taste, whipped cream can be used as a topping.

The bitterness of coffee can be complemented by pairing with sweeter dessert wines like a late harvest Riesling. A cup of hot decaf coffee can also be an ideal accompaniment to help balance out the flavors and make for a perfect after-dinner treat.

This flan can also be served alongside Mexican sweet bread or even with churros for a brunch party or special occasion.

Overall, this coffee flan is versatile in flavor, so you can pair it differently according to your preferences. With its smooth texture and tantalizing coffee aroma, it is sure to leave your taste buds satisfied and craving for more.

Make-Ahead, Storing and Reheating

One of the best things about Flan De Cafe recipe is that it can be prepared a day ahead of time, making your life much easier. Simply prepare the flan, let it cool down to room temperature, and then cover it tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight. This allows for the flavors to blend together, and you’ll get a tastier and creamier texture.

You can store Flan De Cafe in the refrigerator for up to 3 days, but it’s essential to keep it wrapped tightly to prevent any air or moisture from getting in. It’s also crucial to note that flan should never be frozen since it can lead to a change of texture and become watery.

When it comes to reheating Flan De Cafe, you want to be careful not to overheat it since that can cause it to curdle. To reheat your flan, use a water bath method by placing your entire baking dish inside another larger baking pan placed on the stovetop or oven. Add hot water carefully into the larger baking pan until it reaches halfway up the sides of the smaller dish holding the flan. Gently heat over medium-low heat until the desired temperature is achieved; Make sure not to boil or steam your flan as this will damage its texture.

Alternatively, you can also leave refrigerated flan at room temperature for approximately 30 minutes before serving. Garnish with some whipped cream or fresh berries and enjoy!

Tips for Perfect Results

When it comes to a delicious and perfectly made flan de café, little things do matter. The following tips will help you achieve the best results and make your recipe stand out.

Firstly, make sure to use high-quality ingredients. Choosing fresh eggs and dairy products such as heavy cream, milk or condensed milk will ensure your flan is rich and creamy in flavor. Additionally, using freshly brewed coffee instead of instant coffee powder will elevate the taste of your flan de café.

Secondly, when making the caramelized sugar for the top of the flan, stir it very gently. Over-stirring can cause crystallization, resulting in a grainy texture that won’t look good or taste great.

Thirdly, it’s important to pay attention to the baking temperature and time instructions on the recipe. Overbaking can cause cracking on the surface of the flan, while undercooking can leave an unpleasant raw egg flavor. A water bath (bain-marie) can also be used to keep your flan de café moist and prevent overcooking.

Fourthly, let your flan chill completely before serving. This dessert is best served cold straight from the refrigerator, after being left there for at least 2 hours. Cut into slices just before serving and pour over some extra caramel if desired.

Fifthly, aim for even cuts when slicing your flan. Use a sharp knife dipped in warm water to obtain clean cuts without damaging the edges or surface. Small details like these will make your dessert look even more appetizing and well-presented.

Last but not least, practice patience! Making a perfect flan de café takes time and care. Before pulling it out of the oven or unmolding it from its container, double-check every detail to ensure that everything is done correctly.

With these tips in hand, you are now ready to make an amazing flan de café that will impress friends and family alike!

FAQ

As with any recipe, people often have questions regarding certain ingredients or steps. In this section, we’ll answer some of the most frequently asked questions about flan de café. From substitutions to common mistakes, this FAQ will help you create a perfect coffee flan every time. So, let’s dive in!

What are the three types of flan?

In Cuba, the traditional flan recipe calls for the use of evaporated and condensed milk from cans instead of fresh milk due to its unavailability. The Filipino variation of flan is called leche flan and is comparable to the Mexican version. The flan de queso, on the other hand, is a popular Latin American variation made with cream cheese and can be infused with coconut flavor.

Is flan Cuban or Puerto Rican?

If you have a sweet tooth and appreciate classic desserts, one of my favorites that I highly recommend is Flan. This delectable treat, which is often referred to as an egg custard, has a rich and creamy texture that is bursting with flavor. The base of Flan is made up of a blend of milk and eggs, and it is a beloved dessert among Puerto Ricans.

What is Mexican flan made of?

Mexican flan, a widely beloved dessert in Mexico, is made using only a few ingredients, namely eggs, cream cheese, condensed milk, and evaporated milk. Its simplistic yet decadent taste makes it a go-to dish for any dessert lover.

What is the brown liquid in flan?

Before baking the custard, a layer of caramelized sugar is spread to coat the dish. As the custard chills, it produces a syrupy sauce by melting the sugar. This technique is commonly used in the making of flan. This process involves increasing the temperature of granulated sugar until it liquefies and turns amber. Once it reaches the desired shade, it is quickly poured over the dish so it hardens as it cools. The custard is then added, baking it until firm.
