Note: You can easily adjust the seasoning measurements to taste, especially if you prefer a spicier or sweeter meatloaf.

The Recipe How-To

Step 1: Preheat the Oven

Before starting with the recipe, we need to preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C).

Step 2: Mix up the Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine 1 lb of ground beef, 1/4 lb of ground pork, 1/2 cup of seasoned bread crumbs, 1/4 cup of diced onions, 1/4 cup of diced green bell peppers, 2 eggs, slightly beaten, and 1/4 cup of milk. Mix all the ingredients well by hand until everything is well blended.

Step 3: Add more Flavor

Add 1 tablespoon of Dijon mustard, 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce, a pinch of coarse salt (to taste), black peppercorns(to taste), 2 tablespoons of brown sugar, and 3 tablespoons of ketchup to meat mixture. Mix everything together until fully incorporated.

Step 4: Form the Loaf

Take a 9×5-inch loaf pan and fill it with the meatloaf mixture. Press lightly to pack it down and even out the top. Spread an additional 2 to 3 tablespoons of ketchup on top of the loaf.

Step 5: Bake

Bake in the preheated oven for about an hour, or until the internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C). Let it rest for few minutes before slicing and serving.

Serve it with mashed potatoes, gravy, and steamed vegetables for a classic meal at home.

Good Luck!

Substitutions and Variations

Now, I know that not everyone will be able to get all these ingredients. But don’t fret, because there are substitutes that you can use in place of some of the ingredients.

For instance, if you don’t have Dijon mustard on hand, regular yellow mustard will suffice. Or, if you’re out of brown sugar, white sugar mixed with molasses can substitute for it. In addition, diced red peppers can replace the green peppers if they aren’t readily available.

If you want to switch up the meatloaf’s flavor profile, try using ground turkey instead of beef or pork. You can also add a teaspoon of cumin or chili powder to give it a nice smoky taste. Plus, adding extra breadcrumbs will create a denser meatloaf while reducing the breadcrumbs will end up with a lighter texture.

To make this recipe gluten-free for individuals with dietary needs or preferences, feel free to switch the seasoned breadcrumbs with gluten-free bread crumbs or almond flour. Alternatively, quinoa flakes or cornflakes work well as binding agents as well.

And if you’re looking for a way to spice up the classic meatloaf recipe further, a tablespoon or two of hot sauce is tested and proven to bring your traditional meatloaf alive!

There are various ways to customize this recipe according to your liking and availability of ingredients. Don’t be afraid to get creative!

Serving and Pairing

Now, let’s talk about how to serve and pair this 50’s Prime Time Cafe – Mom’s Meatloaf recipe. This dish is versatile and can be accompanied by various sides, making it a perfect addition to your weeknight dinner rotation.

The classic side dish for meatloaf is mashed potatoes, as they complement the savory nature of the dish. When it comes to serving this dish, you can opt to slice the meatloaf and serve it with a generous helping of creamy mashed potatoes on the side or on top of each slice. You can also add some gravy for an even heartier meal.

Another delicious option is roasted vegetables, particularly green beans or carrots. The sweet and smoky undertones of the meatloaf perfectly balance out the fresh taste and crunchiness of these two vegetables. For an extra burst of flavor, we recommend adding some grated Parmesan on top.

If you’re feeling more adventurous, try serving this meatloaf alongside a hearty salad dressed with vinaigrette. Pick greens with slightly bitter profiles like arugula or endive to cut through the richness of the meatloaf.

If you want a more indulgent pairing, opt for macaroni and cheese. The flavor of this baked pasta dish enhances the comforting taste of the meatloaf. Put it all together and you will have a meal that will take you back in time and leave your taste buds satisfied.

No matter what sides you choose, remember that almost anything goes well with Mom’s Meatloaf recipe from 50’s Prime Time Cafe. It’s flexible enough to accommodate your creativity!

Make-Ahead, Storing and Reheating

Listen up, boys and girls, because I’m about to give you some crucial information on make-ahead, storing and reheating this 50’s Prime Time Cafe – Mom’s Meatloaf recipe.

First off, you can make the meatloaf ahead of time and store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days before cooking. This means no last-minute panic attacks and more time to relax before your guests arrive.

And if you don’t finish the whole thing (which seems impossible to me), don’t worry because this meatloaf stores like a dream. Simply wrap it tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil and stick it in the fridge for up to five days. You can reheat individual slices in a microwave for about a minute or so, or reheat the whole thing in an oven (preheated at 350°F) for approximately 15 minutes.

Now, there’s just one thing I need to stress – please do not overcook this meatloaf! It’s important not to dry it out by leaving it in the oven for too long. To avoid this tragedy, cover the dish with foil while reheating in the oven. This will lock in moisture and ensure that your meatloaf comes out juicy and tender every single time.

You’ve got this! With these tips at your disposal, there’s no reason why you can’t indulge yourself in delicious meatloaf goodness any day of the week.

Tips for Perfect Results

Preparing the perfect meatloaf is not rocket science, but there are some tips that you can follow to make sure that your creation is mouth-watering and tender. Here are some suggestions from someone who has made countless mom’s meatloaf recipes in their life.

Firstly, use high-quality ingredients so that the flavors shine through. A good quality ground beef and pork blend will do wonders for the final product, making your meatloaf juicy and slightly crispy on the outside, while remaining fork-tender inside.

Secondly, don’t skimp on seasoning. The recipe already includes flavorful ingredients like Dijon mustard and Worcestershire sauce, but don’t forget to add a pinch of coarse salt and freshly ground black pepper to enhance the taste even more. It makes all the difference.

Thirdly, be gentle with the mixture when mixing it up. Overmixing can result in a dense and dry loaf. Combine the ingredients using your hands or a fork until they’re just blended.

Fourthly, let your meatloaf rest for at least 10 minutes after removing it from the oven before slicing into it. This allows the juices to redistribute throughout the loaf, ensuring that they won’t spurt out when you cut it open.

Lastly, experiment with different variations of toppings and fillings to customize this classic dish to suit your preferences. You can try spreading some ketchup mixed with brown sugar over the top of your meatloaf or incorporating finely chopped red bell pepper or green bell pepper into the mixture for a signature twist.

By following these tips, you’ll be able to make a delectable 50’s Prime Time Cafe – Mom’s Meatloaf Recipe that is sure to become a favorite among your family and friends.
