Now that we have gathered all the necessary ingredients, it’s time to bake. Follow these step-by-step instructions to make your own Peppermint Mocha Brownies!

Preheat and prepare

Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C). Line an 8-inch square baking dish with parchment paper or non-stick baking spray, then set it aside.

Brownie batter

In a medium-sized mixing bowl, whisk together 1/2 cup (115g) unsalted butter, 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar, and 3/4 cup (150g) packed dark brown sugar until creamy.

Then, add in the following in their respective order:

  • 1/2 cup (60g) of cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp (9g) of espresso powder mixed with 1/3 cup boiling water
  • 2 tsp of vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 3 large eggs

Mix these wet ingredients well using a hand-mixer or stand-mixer on low speed. Once the wet ingredients are evenly combined, add in 1 and 1/2 cups (195g) all-purpose flour, spooned & leveled, 1 teaspoon baking powder, and 1 teaspoon baking soda. Turn up the mixer speed to medium-low to incorporate these dry ingredients well into the batter.

Fold in 1 cup (170g) chocolate chips into the brownie batter using a spatula.

Peppermint Mocha swirl

In a separate mixing bowl, stir together 1 box of prepared mocha brownie mix according to its package instruction. Slowly stir in 3/4 cup (170g) prepared candy canes pieces chopped up finely somewhere between pea size and granular.

Use a spatula to swirl peppermint mocha layer on top of the thick fudgy brownie. Use a knife or spatula to make some heavy swirls by diving into the layers down to the bottom of the pan.

Place the baking dish on a middle rack inside your preheated oven. Bake for approximately 40 minutes or until fully cooked, which is tested by inserting a toothpick into the center of your product about halfway through one that needs monitoring.

After removing it from the oven, immediately sprinkle some additional crushed candy canes over the top. Allow them cool before slicing up and serving, as well as before refrigerating them overnight, while storing them in an air-tight container for up to three days.

Enjoy indulging yourself with these minty chocolate treats!

If you’re looking to customize this recipe or try it with different ingredients, here are a few substitutions and variations to consider:

– Gluten-Free: If you want to make these brownies gluten-free, substitute the all-purpose flour for a gluten-free flour blend. You can use almond flour or coconut flour as well.

– Espresso Powder: If you don’t have espresso powder on hand, you can use instant coffee instead. Just dissolve 2 teaspoons of instant coffee granules in the boiling water.

– Peppermint Extract: If you can’t find peppermint extract, try using mint extract instead. It won’t have the same candy cane flavor, but it will still give the brownies a nice minty kick.

– Candy Canes: Instead of using crushed candy canes on top of the frosting, try using Andes mints or chocolate chips.

– Oreo Peppermint Brownies: For an even more decadent treat, mix crushed Oreo cookies into the batter before baking. These cookies will give your brownies an added crunch and chocolate flavor.

These substitutions and variations are sure to take your Peppermint Mocha Brownies to the next level. Experiment with different flavors until you find your perfect combination. Enjoy!

A festive twist to traditional brownies!
A festive twist to traditional brownies!

Now that your peppermint mocha brownies are baked to perfection, it’s time to enjoy them! These brownies make for a delicious treat on their own, but can also be paired with other goodies for an even more indulgent experience.

One classic pairing is a tall glass of cold milk, as the creamy and sweet milk cuts through the rich and decadent flavor of the brownies. For a fun twist, you can try pairing these brownies with hot cocoa instead of milk – it’s like having a delicious warm hug in a mug!

If you’re feeling extra fancy, you can also serve these peppermint mocha brownies with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The cool and creamy ice cream is the perfect complement to the warm and fudgy brownies, and makes for an unforgettable dessert experience.

For those who prefer a more adult experience, pairing these brownies with a steamy cup of coffee is highly recommended. The coffee flavor in the brownies will complement the bold taste of espresso or coffee – it’s like having dessert and coffee all in one!

If you want to take things up a notch, try garnishing your peppermint mocha brownies with some crushed candy canes or dark chocolate shavings. This adds some festive flair to your dessert and provides an added layer of texture and flavor.

You can also freeze them for up to 3 months by wrapping them tightly with plastic wrap and placing them in a freezer-safe container.

Tips for Perfect Results

Rich, fudgy, and full of holiday cheer!
Rich, fudgy, and full of holiday cheer!

To achieve the best results for your peppermint mocha brownies, here are some useful tips and tricks that you can keep in mind:

1. Room temperature ingredients: Remember to take the butter, eggs, and any other refrigerated ingredients out of the fridge at least 30 minutes before you start making your brownie batter. Room temperature ingredients mix more thoroughly, creating a smoother batter which will yield a better result.

2. Use good quality cocoa powder and chocolate chips: Using a high-quality unsweetened cocoa powder, like Dutch process cocoa powder, will give your brownies a rich and chocolaty flavor. Also, try to use chocolate chips rather than chopped chocolate, as they won’t melt too quickly or too slowly during baking, ensuring you can achieve a perfectly melted chocolate in the brownies.

3. Don’t overmix the batter: Overmixing the brownie batter can develop excess gluten from flour, which will result in tough and chewy brownies instead of fudgy ones. So, once you add the flour mixture to the wet ingredient mixture, mix it gently until just combined.

4. Measure ingredients carefully: It is essential to measure all of your ingredients accurately before adding them into the batter because inaccurate measurements can affect the outcome of taste and texture.

5. Use parchment paper: Line your baking pan with parchment paper that hangs over each side as it will make your life easier when lifting out and cutting your baked brownies.

6. Cool your peppermint mocha brownies completely: Once you take your Peppermint Mocha Brownies from the oven, let them cool in the pan for 10 minutes before removing them to cool on wire racks fully.

Remember that baking is both an art and a science so do not be discouraged if your first batch isn’t perfect! Success takes time and practice; after all, mistakes are conducive to progress!

What is the secret to moist brownies?

If you want your brownies to be irresistibly moist, gooey and packed with flavor, swap out the water in your recipe for milk. The higher fat content in milk is the secret ingredient that takes these treats to the next level. So go ahead and indulge in the heavenly taste of milk-infused brownies.

Should I add coffee to my brownie mix?

For an extra boost of chocolate flavor in your brownies, try swapping out the water with coffee. Using just a small amount, about ¼ to ⅓ cup, of coffee can make a big difference in the richness and depth of flavor in your brownie mix. This works especially well because coffee and chocolate are a match made in heaven—coffee has the power to enhance the already delicious chocolate taste, making your brownies even more decadent and indulgent. So give it a try and see for yourself how coffee can take your brownies to the next level.

Why are my brownies not chewy?

If you’re a fan of chewy brownies, you might want to consider using canola oil in your recipe alongside butter as the primary fat. This addition will bring your homemade brownies closer to the texture of boxed mixes. Another essential ingredient to create chewy brownies is brown sugar. It speeds up gluten formation, resulting in the creation of a chewier texture in your brownies. So, if you’re looking to make chewier brownies, don’t forget to include canola oil and brown sugar in your recipe.

Why don’t you have baking soda in brownies?

When it comes to brownies, the type of recipe you choose affects the texture of your final product. Dense and chewy brownies usually don’t call for baking powder or baking soda, while cakelike brownies usually do include a leavening agent to help them become light and fluffy. Additionally, the method you use to bake your brownies can also impact their texture.
