Preparing the Streusel Topping:

  3. Set aside.

Preparing the Cake Batter:

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Grease a 9-inch (23 cm) cake pan with butter and dust it lightly with flour to prevent sticking.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 2 teaspoons of baking powder, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt.
  4. In a separate bowl, beat 1 stick (8 tablespoons) of softened butter until creamy then add 1 cup of sugar and beat again until light and fluffy.
  5. Add 2 large eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  6. Beat in orange zest (peeled part of an orange) and juice from half an orange (approximately 1/4 cup).
  7. Gradually mix in dry ingredients from step 3 into the wet ingredients until it forms a smooth batter.
  8. Stir in 1/2 cup of milk until thoroughly combined.

Assembling Everything Together:

  1. Pour half of the batter into the prepared pan and spread it out evenly.

  5. Use a spoon to gently press down on top to make sure that it sticks to the cake batter.

Baking The Cake:

Place your cake pan in your preheated oven and bake for about 40-45 minutes or until golden brown on top and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean without any batter clinging to it.

Finishing Touches:

Allow your Orange Streusel Coffee Cake to cool down for about 10 minutes before slicing and serving with whipped cream or ice cream as desired.

Pro tip: To make cleanup easier, place parchment paper on the bottom of your cake pan before greasing it with butter and adding flour.

Substitutions and Variations

This recipe calls for a combination of flavors that works perfectly together, but there are some variations and substitutions you can try to make this recipe more personalized or to adjust for dietary restrictions.

For a lighter version, you can swap butter for a vegetable oil like canola oil. This substitution will result in less rich and crumbly cake, but it will be moist and flavorful nonetheless. You can also use almond milk or any other plant-based milk if you want to make this recipe vegan-friendly.

If you prefer a fruitier taste, you can add cranberries or blueberries to the batter, either fresh or frozen. This twist adds a tangy flavor that balances with the sweetness of the orange streusel.

For a more cinnamon-y coffee cake, try dusting cinnamon over the streusel before putting it into the oven, or adding cinnamon to the cake batter itself. The warm spiciness enhances and complements the orange zest.

Lastly, you can use this recipe as a base and switch up some ingredients to create another type of cake. For example, you can swap the orange juice in both the batter and streusel for pumpkin puree and sprinkle pumpkin pie spice on top for a Pumpkin Coffee Cake version. Or use yellow cake instead of coffee cake and top with an almond streusel for an Orange Almond Yellow Cake.

Whatever substitutions you choose will still create a delicious cake with its distinct personality that’s sure to satisfy your taste buds. Don’t be afraid to experiment!

Serving and Pairing

Now that your Orange Streusel Coffee Cake is baked and ready to eat, it’s time to think about how best to serve and pair it. This cake is perfect for breakfast or brunch, but it also makes for an indulgent dessert after dinner.

One of the best ways to serve the Orange Streusel Coffee Cake is warm from the oven with a dusting of powdered sugar on top. The aroma when you first cut into the cake is sure to attract people to its delicious scent, and the soft texture of the cake will keep them coming back for more.

When it comes to pairing this delicious treat with a beverage, coffee or tea would be great. You could choose a variety of coffee flavors such as pumpkin, cinnamon or even almond-flavored coffee. For tea lovers, try pairing it with Earl Grey or jasmine tea as a perfect complement to the orange zest in the cake.

This Orange Streusel Coffee Cake also goes well with other brunch foods. Consider serving it with scrambled eggs and bacon or sausage as a complete breakfast meal. You could also make it part of a larger brunch spread by pairing it with fruit salad or yogurt.

If you’re serving this cake for dessert, try topping each slice with whipped cream or ice cream for an extra indulgent treat. For something different, add some cranberries to the mix for a Cranberry Orange Streusel Coffee Cake.

Make-Ahead, Storing and Reheating

I understand how important it is to have a recipe that works for you, regardless of whether you’re planning ahead or on-the-go. In this section, I’ll provide tips on how to make the Orange Streusel Coffee Cake ahead of time, store it properly, and reheat it without ruining its flavor and texture.

If you’re hoping to make this cake ahead of time, assemble it following the recipe’s instructions up until baking it in the oven. Instead of baking it right away, cover it with plastic wrap and store it in the fridge for up to 24 hours before baking. Doing so will allow the streusel topping to become more compact, which results in a better texture and taste.

On the other hand, if you’ve baked too much cake and want to store it for later enjoyment or consumption, allow it to cool down completely before wrapping it tightly with plastic wrap or aluminium foil. If stored correctly in an airtight container at room temperature, your Orange Streusel Coffee Cake can stay fresh for up to four days.

Reheating your cake couldn’t be simpler! Preheat your oven to 350℉ (176℃) and remove the wrappings from your cake. Place the cake on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake in the preheated oven until heated throughout, about 10-15 minutes depending on size. You may also microwave individual servings for about 20-30 seconds until heated throughout. Remember not to reheat too long as doing so can dry out your cake.

With these tips on make-ahead, storing, and reheating your Orange Streusel Coffee Cake recipe in mind, feel free to enjoy this treat any time of day or night.

Tips for Perfect Results

When it comes to baking, even the smallest mistake can result in a disappointing outcome. That’s why I want to share some tips and tricks to ensure your Orange Streusel Coffee Cake turns out perfectly every time.

Firstly, make sure you use softened butter when combining it with the sugar. This will ensure that the two ingredients mix together smoothly and create a light, fluffy texture in the cake batter.

Another important tip is to measure your ingredients accurately. Baking powder and salt, for example, are ingredients that can easily affect the outcome of your cake if inaccurately measured. Use a measuring spoon or cup to ensure precise measurements every time.

When preparing the streusel topping, be sure not to overmix it. You want chunky crumbles to give the cake a delicious crispy texture. Don’t worry if there are some large pieces – they will add an extra crunch and flavor to each bite.

It’s also important to ensure that your oven temperature is accurate and consistent. Invest in an oven thermometer so you can adjust accordingly and avoid overbaking or underbaking your cake.

Lastly, allow your Orange Streusel Coffee Cake to cool completely before cutting into it. This will help prevent crumbling and ensure that the slices come out clean and perfect.

By following these tips, you’ll be able to make an irresistible Orange Streusel Coffee Cake that will impress all of your friends and family.

FAQ

Before we wrap up this recipe article, let’s go over some frequently asked questions about our Orange Streusel Coffee Cake Recipe. These questions may come up while preparing or serving the cake, and I want to make sure you have all the information you need to achieve perfect results. So, without further ado, let’s dive into the FAQs for this recipe.

What’s the difference between coffee cake and streusel?

When it comes to the distinction between crumb cake and coffee cake, the amount of streusel topping is the key factor. More often than not, crumb cake boasts a thicker layer of streusel topping compared to coffee cake. Furthermore, while streusel topping is a key component of crumb cake, it is optional for coffee cake.

What’s the difference between coffee cake and regular cake?

Coffee cakes are unique among cakes and distinguish themselves with their distinctive streusel topping. Unlike frosted cakes, coffee cakes usually have only a simple glaze, if any at all. They may contain swirls of streusel or incorporate fruit, nuts, or chocolate into the batter.

What makes coffee cake taste like coffee?

As a barista, I’ve learned that instant espresso powder is a convenient way to infuse a baked good with the rich taste of coffee.

How do I keep my coffee cake from getting soggy?

Once the cake has been sliced and enjoyed, leftover slices should be stored in an airtight container to maintain freshness. If the cake has been covered in fondant, it may soften due to the sugar’s ability to absorb moisture. However, storing the cake in an airtight container will help retain moisture within the cake itself. This is the best practice for preserving the cake’s texture and taste.
